In our home state of Minnesota, we’re feeling some weather whiplash as temperatures approached 90 degrees earlier last week, and plummeted to freezing with snowfall over the weekend.

This photo from our former store in the North Loop of Minneapolis is from April 2018, but the question remains the same. And while we’re not ones to complain about wearing a parka in April, these wild weather swings are yet another reminder of the urgency of the climate crisis.

We’re excited to announce that our grantmaking program this year will focus on one major project with the National Parks of Lake Superior Foundation. The mission? Decarbonizing the operations of all 5 national parks along Lake Superior – something that no other national park has done.

From the unique ecosystem of Isle Royale to the historic lighthouses of the Apostle Islands, Lake Superior’s 5 national parks boast natural and cultural resources cherished by generations. But the park facilities run primarily on fossil fuels. This must change.

With 10% of the world’s freshwater, Lake Superior and the National Parks are facing the ravages of a changing climate. We owe it to the lake, the parks, and ourselves to create a future without carbon pollution.

We teamed up with our friends at Rumpl to create this limited-edition packable puffy blanket – the perfect companion for outdoor winter adventures. The blanket is printed with an original photograph from legendary astrophotographer Paul Zizka, who has been chasing northern lights for more than a decade, and (literally) wrote the book on capturing them in photographs.

Paul recalls the particulars of the shoot that resulted in this photo:

"This image was taken on an absolutely electrifying night in southern Greenland, on the edge of the Greenland ice sheet. After a massive day of travel on foot, we finally pitched the tents at a high point overlooking the ice. It wasn’t even close to dark that the green ribbons were already visible in the twilight. For hours we composed images that included both the aurora borealis and the spectacular landforms around us, but every once in a while, the display would blow up overheard, and I would lie on my back, under my tripod, and point my lens directly towards the skies. This is one image that came out of that incredible night in the Greenlandic wilderness."
