Original Royal Refugee

Original Royal Refugee Art & Clothing by Mohamed Hersi Mohamed Hersi, based in Minneapolis, is a talented individual who excels in both painting and clothing design.

His clothing brand, "Original Royal Refugee," serves as a powerful expression of his life experiences and resonates not only with the Somali community but with people from diverse cultures worldwide. Being a Somali American who grew up in India, Hersi's artistic work is deeply influenced by his unique cultural background, a factor that continues to shape his creations to this very day. He fondly r

ecalls his childhood days in New Delhi, where he wandered through bustling streets, absorbing the marvels of the city. This sense of "drifting" serves as a profound inspiration for him to weave stories, both his own and those of the people who have profoundly impacted his life. As an artist, his ultimate goal is to share his experiences and struggles, connecting with individuals who wear his clothing or admire his paintings. An annual event named "10/10" marks Hersi's calendar every October 10th. During this exhibit, he showcases his paintings that depict moments and emotions that have deeply moved him throughout the year.

You don’t have to….but you always do.
Thank you for always showing up & supporting me in person, online.
I think about that when I’m painting or designing & I appreciate you more than I say.

Thank you for opening your doors.

To the faces of lake street, words can’t describe your might & resilience. Spending time with you didn’t just inspire me but also reminded me of how strength really looks like.

As an artist, I felt the defeat so many times, I was after the very thing you couldn’t share, your story, your identity.

I distorted what I could, deleted what you didn’t want to see & protected your secrets, your name.

Lastly, thank you for honoring me with this opportunity, you have an amazing team. Thank you for helping me bring this to project to life.

Grateful to be invited by generation hope to share my story at their retreat.
A room filled with hearts, truth & journey.
I spoke about painting, recovery, and the years it took to believe I was worthy of healing.
8 years clean & still learning, still becoming.
I saw myself in every one of them.
Thank you ❤️

A tribute to the dreamer .0228.

Your story’s been sitting with me, Ibrahim.

You told me you pulled your aunt out of bed because you didn’t want to miss the show.

I’ve thought about that moment a lot since.

It reminded me how deeply art can reach someone, quietly, unexpectedly, and sometimes through the eyes of a dreamer.

Thank you to everyone who came out to support this exhibition, you are deeply appreciated!

Till next time beautiful people.

Last Friday I was gifted the opportunity to spend some time with the brilliant 2nd graders at Alice Smith Elementary. This included my son, Nabil. I say a gift because their excitement reminded me why I started painting in the first place & my ❤️ for the arts.

We started a mural together but ran out of time. Nonetheless,
the future is filled with light & love for these young artist.

That same day, I stopped by to deliver a painting and got to see Zack. I first met him about two years ago while working on a mural for the center, and he’s still the same radiant Zack, but now he’s a foot taller.

Love!
