Silk screening Basics!

Silk screening can be a great way to create an original design and have it mass produced. Silk screening is a stencil process of printmaking in which an image is imposed on a screen of silk or other fine mesh,
with blank areas coated with an impermeable substance, and in is forced through the mesh onto the printing surface. The artist Andy Warhol used silkscreens as a means of applying paint to canvases. Below is an example of a mixed media tee with silk screen and metallic foil.

Wool Sweaters vs. Acrylic Sweaters - What's the Difference?

Doom Wear is one of the only companies around to sell 100% wool letter sweaters. But did you know that we also sell acrylic sweaters? Because of this, we are often asked about the differences between wool and acrylic.

The benefits of wool include:
- It is warmer than acrylic
- It is a natural protein fiber
- It is less likely to pill than acrylic
- It will last longer - some wool sweaters have been passed down 3 generations!
- It keeps it shape better

The benefits of acrylic include:
- Cost - acrylic is generally cheaper than wool
- Acrylic is technically acrylonitrile and is made from natural gas and petroleum
- It is moth proof
- In most cases, it can be machine washed and dried
- It is mainly non-allergenic

The attached photo represents two examples of 100% wool sweaters with a combination of embroidery and chenille lettering. Hope this helps!

Tackle twill lettering is another process that we are often asked to explain. Tackle twill is essentially a form of appliqué. In most cases it involves a combination of letters, numbers or designs cut from a piece of fabric that are sewn onto a garment with a zigzag, satin or double running stitch. This type of lettering is most commonly seen on fraternity and sorority jackets and sports team uniforms. It is dramatically less expensive than chenille lettering.

When filling orders for custom old school letter sweaters, we are often asked the question, "what is chenille lettering?" The answer is that chenille letters are made from yarn that is quite thick, soft and fuzzy. It is named after the French word for caterpillar. Most caterpillars are covered in short hairs that give them a fuzzy look - it is this particular look that yields the name for Chenille yarn. Very luxurious!
