Some photos Broken Bow took this weekend from our pop up at the Cripple Creek Gold Rush Rodeo here in Colorado.

It’s an incredible thing to see the people of our beautiful home state still keeping it punchy after all these years.

Thankfully some things are too far away for the rest of the world to get to.

The original 50-star American flag was designed by a 17-year-old student from Lancaster, Ohio, named Robert “Bob” Heft in 1958.

The flag was designed as part of a school project that he received a B- on. His teacher told him the grade would be reconsidered if the flag was accepted in Washington. It was, and the grade was changed to an A. Heft was confident that Alaska and Hawaii would be added as states, despite skepticism from his teacher and those around him.

It was selected by President Eisenhower in 1959, and has remained as the nation’s flag to this day.

Prior to The Deer Hunter in 1978, Vietnam was an almost entirely avoided subject American cinema. PTSD had not even been formally recognized as a condition in veterans, and many wanted to forget about the war as a whole.

Yet, the movie delved into both the lighthearted and morose experiences of Vietnam veterans, exposing the horror that many returned to while the world moved on like normal.

Only two years later in 1980, PTSD would be recognized as a formal condition. It is speculated that the film and other depictions of Vietnam helped force the condition into the light.

There is a measure on the Oregon ballot that would effectively ban all hunting and fishing by extending the legal protections currently afforded to pets to all other animals.

It would also tragically defund the Oregon wildlife management system, as it is funded almost entirely by sportsmen that purchase hunting and fishing licenses, leaving it with no means of conservation.

Though not yet finalized, if it is passed it will be the end of a beautiful tradition of sporting and wildlife conservation in the state of Oregon.

“Take Me” is one of the few songs ever written by George Jones. It is all the more haunting and beautiful, knowing that is a song of lived experience.

Apart from being an actor and amateur race car driver, Paul Newman raised some of the most money for charity of any American actor living or dead.

He began his “Newman’s Own” charity partly as a joke, bottling his own salad dressing and gifting to his friends, until finally deciding to make it available for sale and donating 100% of the profit.

17 years after his death, the charity has donated well over $600 million to children with rare illnesses, entirely from the sale of salad dressings, pasta sauces, and popcorn.

It is one of the most unusual philanthropic endeavors in history, but easily the most admirable aspect of his legacy.

“The Last Coal Mine” is an ongoing photo album by Dane Rhys capturing the vanishing coal mining communities all the way from West Virginia to Wales.

The series of photos captures the deeply important but strenuous profession that most think of as a relic of the US and the rest of the world.

It is an equal parts beautiful and saddening series, shedding light on the men that that still support families off of one of the oldest occupations in the industrial world as it slowly disappears.

There’s a whole world that still runs on the jobs you never see or talk about.
