Tech Tip: “Grip, Swing, Release”. Stop strangling your ice tool and let it breathe. Most people don’t start doing this until it’s too late and you’re already pumped or your hands are frozen bricks. Start this technique from the start and you will have much better results on those steep climbs. The other good thing this practice promotes is solid feet so that when you do let go of an ice tool you don’t open the barn door. Remember your feet/legs take you up the ice climb. If you’re releasing your hand off a tool every few swings you will absolutely feel the difference.
