In recognition of we take a moment to reflect and educate.

Leonidas Harold “L.H.” Jones, who was born in 1915 and died in 1983, is a shining example of leadership in Mount Airy.

For 30 years, he was principal of J.J. Jones School, named after his father, a principal for 33 years who pioneered secondary education for local African-Americans.

J.J. Jones School was originally an all-black campus on Jones School Road, which closed with the opening of J.J. Jones Intermediate School on Riverside Drive in the 1990s. Facilities of the old school became home to a number of community agencies, with the site now known as L.H. Jones Family Resource Center.

L.H. Jones followed in his father’s footsteps in trying to create opportunities for minority students through higher learning.

He was the first African-American to be named to the North Carolina State Board of Elections since the turn of the 20th century.

His name and story lives on in monument at the “Whittling Wall” in downtown Mt. Airy.

I Miss Mayberry.

Growing up in Mt. Airy, you know all about Mayberry. It’s what put us on the map. You’ve heard all the jokes and have gone by all the nicknames. It’s not until you move away and people ask you where you are from that you say “You’ve probably never heard of Mt. Airy (pronounced locally as Munnairy), but I bet you’ve heard of Mayberry”. It’s not until then that you realize the cultural significance of where we are from. Not many people you meet outside the 336 have a hometown with a claim to fame as we do. As time goes by, the memories have started to fade and the once wildly known town isn't on the tip of tongues as it used to be. That’s why we started Snappy Days; to pay homage to the past while adapting to the future.
