Today was one of those days that go by so fast, a blur of hugs and color and laughs and you’re left both exhausted and filled to the brim. To everyone that came by our booth to check out our wares or our new Farm Fresh booth endeavor - thank you just isn’t enough. The farmers that are providing all the good fleece, the helpers that make the mill hum and the booth visitors feel welcomed and taken care of. The fellow vendors that lend their cheers and support, the organizers that pave the way. The fiber family from near and far that make all this hard work so, so worth it. Your oohs and aahs, and yes, purchases, keep our work going and our hearts full. We aim to make our booth warm, inviting, and inspiring. We hope we achieve a bit of that.

Normally this would be a wrap up post but there’s a whole other day tomorrow (Sunday) and we have two more farmers hosting the Farm Fresh booth. We hope you can come out and see all the amazing humans that make our little corner of the fiber world the best around. Day 2, we’re ready for you. After a little nap.

Fiber Fusion is ALMOST HERE!! There is such a lot of scurrying, prepping, and piles of wool EVERYWHERE in the mill this week. This gathering of our community is one of the best of the year - full of friends, fuzzy critters, and so much creativity. We can't wait to see you!

Skagit Woolen Works is a woman-owned wool processing mill in the heart of the Skagit Valley. Specializing in locally sourced fibers, they make a wide array of breed-specific yarn and roving for crafters. A zero-waste mill, they also specialize in putting every fiber to good use, with products like quilt batting, wool stuffed pillows, wool pellets for the garden, and much more. Anna and Jess are looking forward to their 3rd year as sponsors and vendors and plan to roll out some special offerings for one of our favorite events!

Happy Holiday weekend fiber fam! And many thanks for the warm reception on our last post about Farm Fresh, we're SO thrilled so many of you are looking forward to it as much as we are!

In addition to planning for Farm Fresh we've been madly prepping for for months now, and the final lineup is nearly ready! We've had this latest (last) batch of Fir Oak Sock available at our in-person shows, and squirreled the rest away for Fiber Fusion. The rest will hit the online store June 10th after the show.

We say 'last batch' because the shepherd we get the wonderful Suffolk x Romney fleeces from is sadly retiring, so no more lambs going forward. The yarn is named after the farm on San Juan Island, and we've developed such a fondness for the shepherd (to know Guard Sundstrom is to have a friend for life) as well as his beautiful wool. For him, the lambs and the land are the first priority; the wool has always been a burden and an afterthought. When our friends brought us the first clip, we knew it was something special. And Fir Oak Sock was born. We've since made a few batches, matching the color palette to the release date, making each batch truly seasonal.

The Suffolk makes the yarn bouncy and resistant to felting, and Romney gives it length and strength, with a nice easy hand. It takes the dye beautifully as well. The round 3ply construction means these should be hard wearing socks (or whatever fingering-weight project you have in mind; we've definitely been selling some sweater quantities!).

Colors are Natural; Lupine; Crocus; and Puget. They make a beautiful PNW Spring/Summer palette don't you think?

Wheel Spinning 2: Plying with Anna Hosick-Kalahan of Skagit Woolen Mills

Spinning multiple plies (singles) of handspun yarn together creates strength, balance and character. If you are comfortable spinning consistent singles on your spinning wheel, then join Anna Hosick-Kalahan – co-owner of Skagit Woolen Works () — for a next step in your spinning adventures! We’ll talk about the primary points of plying for balance, including direction, amount of twist, and numbers of plies, and how setting or blocking your yarn can be the definitive final step. We’ll practice plying 2- and 3-ply yarns, while talking about different tools and techniques.

Once we’ve learned “the rules” of plying, we dive right in to a discussion on how breaking them can open the doors to non-traditional and art-yarns.

Materials: Loaner wheels and materials included, but if you have your own wheel you are encouraged to bring it!

Are you ready for the big reveal??!! We've been hinting at this for months (and months 😅 ) and it's finally here...

Announcing a new experience this year....Farm Fresh! We've had this idea to have a mini 'farmer's market' at the festival as a way to showcase a few of the amazing local farmers we work with and process for, and the result is 'Farm Fresh' - 2 days, 4 local farm(er)s, over 12 different breeds of sheep represented, and dozens of fresh local products to peruse, all under one canopy.

The farms:

The booth will be adjacent to our booth (right across from the spinning circle) and there's a rotating 'host' throughout the weekend (watch this space for the full schedule). But you'll be able to shop all the amazing products all weekend.

Each farm will bring not just fiber we process for them, but loads of other goodies that come from the farm. Tallow soaps, natural dye kits, sheep skins, hand made felted goodies...it's truly a treat to bring all these hardworking farms to our favorite fiber family!

This is a unique setup we're trying out, as it allows each farm to bring just what they have available (which might not always be enough to fill an entire booth); to host for just a few hours rather than an entire weekend (during what is typically a very busy season for them); and to showcase the myriad of things that farms make and do to keep thriving while engaging with the community.

You'll get a chance to talk to each farmer about their sheep, their products, educational opportunities, and more. We hope you'll give them all a warm welcome, and we'll see y'all soon in Monroe!
