As we celebrate 100 years of The Golden Rule Store, we've been digging through our archives: old newspaper articles, photographs, advertisements, and other pieces of the store's history.
Over the coming months, we'd like to share some of what we find.
This newspaper clipping from 1962 looks back on the early years of The Golden Rule Store and includes one little detail we especially liked.
For years, the store kept a box of men's handkerchiefs on a counter near the door. As longtime manager Lloyd Stiffler explained:
“Men sometimes leave home in the morning and forget a handkerchief.”
Men working nearby knew they could stop at The Golden Rule Store to pick one up on their way to work.
It's a small detail, but we love the glimpse it gives into what the store and everyday life in downtown Muncie was like more than 60 years ago.
We'll be sharing more from our archives as we continue celebrating our 100th anniversary. We hope you'll enjoy looking back with us!
