453-Denim + Quilting Fabric Mix Modern Quilt
Sat 1 Aug 2026 9:30am - 4:30pm
Code: 453
Class Type: Academy
Length: 1 Day
Room: CS19
Category: Patchwork and Quilting
Level: All Abilities
Description : In this New Orleans Peel workshop, use deconstructed denim in many different colours and quilting cotton to make a quilt that honours your heritage and movement. This pattern has beautiful curves and eye-catching repeats. It was inspired by Sandra's family history in New Orleans and the "peeling back" of her family tree. As you make the 9" Key Block, you'll learn how to piece and match seams in a curved way. Then you'll see how four Key Blocks make an 18" Full Peel. After that, you can play around with the layout: keep it classic, make it random, try it on point, or change the blocks to make a border or table runner. This class is for advanced beginners and teaches how to prepare curves correctly, stitch smoothly, press seams open to reduce bulk, and get ready for a polished, modern finish. There is a class supply list available on the Festival of Quilts website. This workshop includes entry to Festival of Quilts for this day.

Every Stitch Has a Story — And Mine Just Landed in Boston.

First day in a city I’ve never explored before as an adult, and already I see my work everywhere — in tunnel lights that shimmer like hand-stitched fabric, in bold construction banners that feel like studio manifestos, and in a vibrant, geometric deer crafted from a thousand colorful fragments.

With 37 years of transforming discarded denim and reclaimed fabrics into museum-quality art quilts, I understand what it means when broken pieces come together to create something extraordinary.

Boston, you feel it too.

I’m here. I’m observing. And already, a new inspiring piece is taking shape in my mind.

Sandra Lee Design — honoring African American history, memory, and identity, one stitch at a time.

some of the most important stories in my life were never written in books. They were sewn into fabric.

I Saw Potential Where Others Saw Old Jeans

Before You Throw Away Your Denim, Watch This
Most people see worn-out jeans and pass them by. Sandra
Lee Chandler sees texture, history, color, and possibility. Follow along as she searches Goodwill for denim treasures, brings them home, and transforms them into art while supporting a mission that helps individuals build stronger futures through education, training, and employment opportunities.

Join fiber artist and educator Sandra Lee Chandler as she heads into Goodwill in search of denim treasures. From browsing the racks to checking out at the register, every purchase becomes part of a larger story. Back in the studio, donated jeans are transformed into new works of art through deconstruction, design, and creativity.

But Goodwill is more than a place to shop and donate. Every donation and purchase helps support job training, career development, education programs, and opportunities that strengthen our community. When you donate or shop at Goodwill, you’re helping people build brighter futures.
I don’t just shop for denim—I shop for possibilities.

Every quilt, jacket, and textile artwork I create begins with materials that someone else no longer needed. Through Goodwill, those items get a second life while helping support programs that strengthen our community through education, job training, and career opportunities.

Your donation matters. Your purchase matters. Together, we’re reducing waste, supporting local communities, and proving that creativity can transform more than fabric.

What treasures have you discovered at Goodwill?
