Today I had a bridesmaid dress fitting with Elizabeth, one of my brides from 2021. Obviously I asked to see a picture or 2 from her and Meagan’s wedding, and as soon as I laid eyes on all that rainbow smoke I knew I had to pause all my other plans and share this shot IMMEDIATELY! I am obsessed.
(Nothing like the perfect pride shot for pride month to finally break my posting dry spell!)

Slow and steady freehand lacework—making some custom sleeves for a bride! Even I find this mesmerizing to watch.
(Somehow in my 13 years of doing this work I’ve only caught my finger with the needle 2 times...which seems pretty good considering how close I come all the time 😂)

Halloween means taking a break from all the ivory for something a little more colorful! I have been making dresses for Bea Hamilton () since before she was even born, but this year her sisters Goldie and Harriet got custom made dresses too and not just hand-me-downs! (Gonna go ahead and put out a disclaimer that this is not something I can be hired to do. I only do it for these girls because I adore them).
I started with Simplicity pattern 3725, which I modified to look like the dresses Peggy, Angelica, and Eliza wear on stage in the musical Hamilton. On all 3 I left the skirt fabric flat in the front and then pleated from the hips around to the back (the original pattern had the skirts gathered all the way around instead of pleated or left flat at all). I also added loops and a lace up over the zippers in the back. This was a functional idea of mine to make tiny Harriet’s dress adjustable since the smallest pattern size was still too big for her. But I loved the look of it so much that I ended up adding it to all 3 of them. Other changes included: covered buttons, antique lace trims, the tabs at the waist on Peggy’s (Harriet’s) dress, and that deep ruffled V on Angelica’s (Bea’s) bodice.
More pics on my personal account if you want to see a video of tiny Peggy singing “work!” 🥰

Well, I didn’t do a perfect job of keeping the dress centered as I was filming this time lapse, but I wanted to show why I LOVE working with lace and illusion fabric SO very much. I took up the side and under bust of this dress, between the existing bust and side seams. We call this technique “cut and paste.” (Do not attempt unless you really know what you are doing!!). Literally mark, cut around the appliqués, overlap your pins, stitch, trim, press. I could do this all day long y’all. Bring me all your lace gowns!

Oh hey 👋🏻
Here’s a couple messy pictures to demonstrate how much I LOVE working with lace.
I took this gown in a few sizes, and while the bride loved the fit in the top, once all was said and done, the thigh/knee area just felt a little too mermaid-y for her taste. Oops! We should have focused more on that in the first fitting. Luckily, I held on to all the lace scraps I took off the hem, so I could easily fix it! I cut around the appliqués from the hip down to the flare and filled in the shape with about 2 extra inches of lace on each side. Can you tell? Once it’s sewn in you will never even know the sides were pieced together like that.
Fortunately she didn’t even bat an eye when I took a pair of scissors to the dress with her still in it. 😂
Bought a sample dress with a few holes in it? I can cover that with lace.
Vintage veil with a giant rip in the bottom? Lace.
Ruffle sleeve is 3” too tight where it meets the zipper? Lace.
Bolero is way too small and the armholes cut down too much in the front? Lace lace lace.
I’ll be singing it’s praises til the end of time.

to this sweet vintage redesign I did for Fran a few years back. Aside from having to take in the bodice to make it fit better, we basically left the top part of the dress alone. But I shortened both layers of the skirt from floor to midi length, taking the innermost lining in a good bit (on every seam!) to change the silhouette from an almost a-line shape to something much more fitted.
This dress was also severely stained when we started. Fortunately, a good soak in Sharon’s Solution took all that discoloration out!

—this October, Sarah and Drew will celebrate their 3 year anniversary and I simply cannot believe it’s been that long since I worked with her! I’ll be honest: I can’t remember everything I did to her wedding dress, but it’s Hayley Paige so you know I had to adjust the straps and the bust area, hem the skirt and put in a bustle. That basically goes without saying. But what I DO remember vividly is taking her grandmother’s simple pink wedding dress and turning it into a skirt for her rehearsal dinner. I asked for a photo of her grandmother wearing the dress and got this response from Sarah (it was so sweet I had to share):
“There was only one photo that got saved from their wedding, which my grandfather still has and is too attached to let us borrow it to copy, which I find so sweet! That picture is of them joyously walking out of the chapel while rice is being thrown with the biggest smiles on their faces! In that photo her dress is light pink, but so are their faces and we were always told she wore a white dress but the colors were off because her brother (the photographer) used the wrong type of film which distorted the color. We didn’t find out the dress was actually pink until she passed away. We were cleaning out her closet and found it, and my grandpa confirmed it was pink the whole time! Not sure why she didn’t want us knowing that her dress wasn’t white (oh antiquated views on purity). I love and miss her so much. She also had polio as a teen, and so walking herself out of the chapel at her own wedding was a huge deal!”
I know her grandmother would have been thrilled to see that dress worn again and to know how much it meant to everyone.

Fluttery sleeves. Fluttery hearts. Oh my goodness I’ve been dying to see pictures of Kate and JeRee’s wedding. This cover photo could be a painting. 😍
These 2 lovely ladies bought coordinated dresses—more lace for JeRee, more beadwork for Kate, but similar materials and color palettes so everything looked cohesive. They both wanted custom flutter sleeves, and since we could not get materials direct from the designers, we all spent so much time trying to find the perfect fabric—testing different layerings to create that very specific shade of champagne!
JeRee’s dress fit almost perfectly to begin with. She just needed a few tucks in the lace and some tightening around the waist. Kate needed quite a bit of that heavily beaded bodice taken in and a significant hem.
Getting to work with 2 brides at once was such a rare treat—double the joy from beginning to end!

If you’re dreaming of warmer days, enjoy this throwback of sweet and stunning ballerina bride Esabella!
Even though Esa got married back in 2018, I didn’t even have to pull her ticket to remember what I did to her dress! Y’all, I took that bodice in on every seam—bust, sides, even the center—to make a size 12 fit her size 0/2 frame. I remember it so vividly. It was maybe the first time I’d ever taken in a dress on the center seam. To begin with, most gowns don’t even have a seam up the middle, but even when they do, that specific alteration isn’t usually possible. Removing fabric from the middle almost always pulls the bust seams too far in, but occasionally—as with this dress—it was a necessary step to achieve the perfect fit and raise the neckline. Naturally, Esa also needed the length and the shoulders shortened, and a bustle to pull up that massive train! (We opted for a ballroom bustle to make train look like it just disappeared)!
Thank you for trusting me to try something a little unconventional to make your dress just perfect. 🥰 📷:

Here’s another behind the scenes before and after (in reverse order of course!).
This WToo (Watters) gown is one of the more popular styles I work on, but not every bride wants a neckline cut all the way down to their waist!
Sarah ordered extra lining and lace for me to fill in the front. The first picture shows the finished product, the second shows the lining insert before the additional lace was added, and the 3rd photo shows the original design (pulled directly from the Watters website).
I also had to take up the bust seams about an inch on each side from waist to shoulder, adding boning for better structure and support.
One thing I will say about Watters: even though their WToo line almost always needs a good bit of altering (👎🏻), their materials can be ordered in a nice range of colors and ship in record time and are incredibly affordable (👍🏻). Makes it so much easier to customize!

Ok, I try not to play favorites, but Martina Liana is killing it with these dresses! I love working on them as much as I love looking at them, so I was pretty excited the first time I opened Jessica’s bridal bag and saw this gown.
Her biggest concern was...well, to use the scientific term...side b**b. Basically, the corset pushed everything up, but the bodice didn’t sit high enough to cover the underarm creases it inevitably created. Fortunately, this gown comes with separate sleeves (that no one ever wears), and I was able to repurpose some of the heavily beaded appliqués to raise the curve about an inch on each side (tap through my BTS highlight to find some photos from when I was working on it)!
Jessica also needed a hem and a bustle (there’s a sweet reception photo of her and her dad showing off the American bustle).
I am still the most excited about how perfectly this dress fit her in the bust though. When you are working with soft semi-sheer materials, there’s a lot of structural engineering required to keep everything in its rightful place. I had to add extra boning in a few places on top of what was already there! Martina Liana does a GREAT job designing gowns that provide adequate support, but sometimes even they need a little help from an alterations expert.
I’m so glad I could make this gorgeous gown even more perfect. Jessica, you looked flawless!
