Could this be the longest-running record pressed only at one plant??? 🧐🧐🧐

In our ongoing URP history series of insane releases pressed here the past 75+ years, feast your eyes on the stamper folder and test pressing for one of the most influential singles ever to grace our plant - it's Negative Approach's debut 10-song 7" EP from the bona-fide luminaries at Touch and Go Records. This beauty was birthed here in '82 and re-pressed for Touch and Go time and time again to this day. Rare as hell!

Coming out of the Detroit counterculture and punk scene, Negative Approach drew the blueprint for midwest hardcore and this single is regarded as an all-timer - one of the best USHC 7"s ever. 10 songs clocking in at less than 10 minutes? Wildly interesting, fast, gruff, methodical songs unphased by the test of time? Inspiring thousands of bands since this hit the street? This 7-incher has it all.

Get your copy at the Touch and Go Records webstore and fine independent record stores near you.

In our ongoing URP history📓series of notable, influential and just plain cool releases pressed here over the years, check out this never-before-seen stamper folder from Chicago post-rock icons Tortoise, a relic from the 2012 repress of their early catalog 7" single “Lonesome Sound” on Thrill Jockey Records.

The Mosquito single (also pressed at United) came out in 1993 on Torsion Music, run by the Jesus Lizard's David Simms (and its only release), was a co-release with Thrill Jockey in a pairing with the "Lonesome Sound" single. The covers make one picture when you put them together. In 2012, Thrill Jockey officially re-released both singles, at a time when influential titles like these had not been on vinyl in years and were finally making their prodigal return to vinyl.

Tortoise’s influence had grown immensely since the first 7” pressing, steadily guiding rock experimentation into the jazzed, dubbed, krauted, and droned zones that were less traveled by even the most adventurous guitar-music gurus of the early ‘90s. By the early ‘10s, there was even a broadly-accepted genre name to describe the approach to music. Tortoise had spent the previous couple decades reaching global audiences, releasing 6 critically acclaimed LPs, and distinctly making their mark on independent music history, so what better time to re-release and revisit the early fertile ground that led to the impactful rise?

For all those going to Big Ears Festival in Knoxville this weekend, be sure to add Tortoise to your must-see list. 💞

Few artifacts in the world of music combine artistry and craftsmanship as beautifully as vinyl records. At United Record Pressing (URP), we take immense pride in preserving the tradition of vinyl while pushing its boundaries through innovation, precision, and sustainability. For more than 75 years, URP has been at the forefront of vinyl manufacturing, whether crafting the first Beatles 7-inch record in the U.S., supporting Negative Approach, Cat Power, and Ween throughout the late 20th century, or helping contemporary artists design visionary album experiences.

While vinyl is a physical medium, the sound on each record often originates as a high-resolution digital recording captured to a hard drive before being meticulously transformed into grooves you can hear. Creating high-quality vinyl records involves complex steps, each requiring a delicate balance of science, artistry, and technology. This blog post explores the process of vinyl record production at URP, from mastering to pressing and packaging, highlighting what makes URP unique in the vinyl industry.

Curious how we make the magic happen? Dive into the vinyl-making process at URP and see what sets us apart in the world of vinyl records.
