Maria Grazia Chiuri is the first woman to be appointed creative director at Dior.

This ensemble from her debut collection illustrates her ability to contemporize the house’s storied history of glamour, femininity, and chic – now on view at The Museum at FIT. Chiuri deftly and wittily balances a T-shirt emblazoned with the title of Ngozi Adichie’s essay, “we should all be feminists,” and tulle skirt.

Tomorrow, Maria Grazia Chiuri will be honored with the Award for Artistry of Fashion at the annual luncheon which benefits The Museum at FIT.

Madame Grès established her business in 1932, and was best known for her meticulously pleated, Grecian-style gowns. Yet her body of work was widely varied and constantly evolving. This silk chiffon evening dress from 1967 is at once sculptural and soft.
