During my life, I don't know how many times I've visited the tomb of the Unknown Soldier in Arlington Cemetery. Each time I've visited, I think about the inscription on the tomb . . . "KNOWN BUT TO GOD."
I am grateful for that man's sacrifice.
I am grateful that our country honors such sacrifice.
I am grateful that God knows the man in the tomb by name . . . even if I don't know him.
This past weekend, my wife and I took our granddaughter to the Tomb. While there, I saw something that I've never seen before.
A portion of the crowd was not showing proper decorum. There was a group of noisy observers.
I shot the photo above with my iPhone. That solider stepped off the guard line and faced the group. He snapped into in a picture perfect present arms position and barked out the following command,
"Visitors, you will maintain
proper honor and show respect in this sacred ground!"
The noisy crowd's response? Yeah . . . they quickly quieted, quickly obeyed, and quickly dispersed.
That soldier's words and actions were powerfully beautiful. It was an awesome sight to behold.
