In this amazing year of 2023, just when I thought things couldn't get any better, British Vogue, led by Edward Enninful, has released a front cover that showcases sustainability trailblazers, including three talented Black female fashion designers. One of these designers is named Tolu Coker, a remarkable young woman.

What makes this cover so incredible is that during my time as a fashion designer from the early 2000s to 2015, my designs were featured in British Vogue without being acknowledged by name. The magazine's former team once told me that my "background and story of upcycling sofas into fashion garments, did not resonate with its readership."
But here I am today, witnessing a Black editor taking the helm and celebrating diverse talents, including someone that resembles me, my sisters, my cousins and shares my "background!"

Even more significant is seeing that Tolu Coker, who attended my creative sessions many years ago as a child in a local London community centre, where I volunteered my services is now gracing the British Vogue front cover for January 2024. It's truly a full-circle moment 🙌

There are countless similar stories to be shared, and for a while, these incidents would bring me down and plunge me into deep depression. However, I soon realised that I could channel my frustration into creating positive change, which led me to the world of academia.

I would like to express my heartfelt gratitude to the students of my MA Design Management program at the UAL: University of the Arts London London College of Communication, as well as the students from the other courses where I serve as an associate lecturer within Central Saint Martins, University of The Arts London & London College of Fashion, University of the Arts London.
They nominated me for various categories in this year's Arts Union Students Award, and I am incredibly PROUD to say that I am an official recipient of the Arts Student Union Arts Awards 2023 - Social Justice & Sustainability Award.
Additionally, I am a nominee for the Student Voice Champion Award.

Honoured to have shared my entrepreneurial journey with University of the Arts London's London College of Fashion students as part of their "Get Ready '23" orientation events held annually at 🙏🏿

It was humbling to share the ups and downs of life as a former UAL student, a practitioner in the fashion industry and now an academic.

Kayaking past 3am in the morning, just to see the natural wonder, that is the Bioluminescence water.
This natural wonder can be seen in only 5 locations on earth, including Jamaica 🇯🇲

Would you believe me, if I said I do NOT want to leave this beautiful island?!?!

I am having the time of my life.

Jennifer would be so PROUD of me, as I put my fear of spiders/bugs, open waters and heights, all aside, to honor her memory; for she planned for us to do this tour 🙏🏿😇

"BUT ah who tell mi fi wear a silk designer coordinating shorts set into the forest" 🇯🇲🫣🤣😂😅

The tour guide laughed and his first words were, as I embarked on the tour bus were...

"Oh so, you're an instagram'er... you didn't get the memo! Expect for your clothes to get ruined!"
.. And ruined they were by the end of the 24 hour excursion. All mi knee dem scratch up, and batter bruise, worst than they were pre-trip 🤣

Major congratulations to Ms for her well deserved "Fashion icon accolade.
Ms Rowland was honored at the 16th annual Harlem's Fashion Row Fashion Show and Style Awards.

It must be said, the role that Mrs aka. Mama Tina, played in inspiring even my desire to want to become a fashion designer with her amazing coordinating outfits, she designed for the Destiny's Child group members in the early days of their musical journey 🙏🏿

We would like to take this opportunity to thank Ms Rowland for supporting the brand, via choosing to wear our Silk bustier dress within her album artwork.

Just finished an amazing group tutorial online session with the talented students of our London London College of Communication, University of the Arts London MA Design Management course, as they work on their Final Major Projects (FMPs).

The session was a direct rip-off (🫣🤣) or should I say, "it was inspired" by my MA Academic Practice Supervisor, the amazing Dr John O'Reilly 🙏🏿

Despite the difficult timing of the FMPs, especially for those in the fashion industry and trying to engage with the academic world throughout the month of August, the students were empowered by contextualizing their "messy" research (Cook 2009, Mellor 2011) and evidencing their process and knowledge.

It was heartwarming to witness their joyous giggles and patting each other on the back to celebrate their tangible achievements.

Thanks to Dr John, Catherine Smith, Dr Frederico Matos, Lindsay Jordan & Paul Jackson for sharing their wisdom via the PGCert & MA Academic Practice program.

Special thanks to my amazing life and academic mentors Aisha Richards of Shades Of Noir & Angela Drisdale-Gordon for giving me and so many others from our community these amazing opportunities 🙏🏿💪🏿✊🏿🖤
