At 81, I often look back at my accomplishments and the one I’m proudest of is that I kept going.
There were plenty of times when things didn’t happen when I thought they would. In fact, some of my greatest success didn’t come until later in life.

I kept believing there was something more around the corner. Another opportunity, or idea, or the next chapter.

The greatest victory isn’t the finish line, it’s simply refusing to believe you’ve reached it yet.

Fashion is at its best when it gives you permission to experiment. That’s what I loved about the ’70s!
There wasn’t one prescribed version of who a woman was supposed to be. You could play with your hair, your makeup, your silhouette, your entire identity. And then wake up the next day and try something completely different.
It was a time that was truly about discovering yourself through creativity. Maybe that’s something fashion could use a little more of today: less perfection, more play.

Today I'm 81 and I’m thinking less about what I can acquire and more about what I can leave behind.
Typically when I am celebrating myself for my birthday, I thinking of buying something extravagant. And there’s nothing wrong with enjoying beautiful things... but this birthday, something feels different.
I want the years ahead of me to stand for something. I want my choices to reflect what I care about, and I want whatever influence I have to extend beyond myself.

Maybe that’s one of the gifts of getting older: realizing that fulfillment can come less from what you collect and more from what you contribute.

This year, my gift to myself is leaving a little more good behind.

Today I'm 81, and I’m thinking less about what I’ve accumulated and more about what I can contribute. What have I learned? What can I share? How can I leave things just a little bit better than I found them?

I don’t believe we’re given all these years just to look backward at the life we’ve lived, but that we’re still here because there’s something left for us to say, to give, to change.

That is my birthday message. ❤️

We can spend so much time waiting for the perfect moment, or to feel ready. You might want to know exactly what you’re doing. or until life calms down... but reinvention doesn’t happen under perfect conditions. It happens when you decide that where you’re going matters more than having every detail figured out.

Start where you are and learn as you go. You have to give yourself permission to change direction because your next chapter doesn’t need perfect conditions. It just needs you to begin.

The older I get, the less interested I am in wasting time on things that don’t matter.
Time becomes more valuable as we age because we finally understand what it’s truly worth. So enjoy it and protect it, and spend as much of it as you can creating a life that still excites you.

Every minute counts.

You can spend your whole life trying to outrun the clock or you can spend it becoming the person you're meant to be.
Aging is inevitable. What you do with the years you're given is the real story.

I've come to believe that life has a way of leading us where we're supposed to go. Our job now is to keep showing up, keep growing, and trust that each chapter has a purpose.

Thirty years on live television taught me a lot more than how to sell clothes.
It taught me how to prepare, how to connect, how to adapt, and how to keep showing up, even when the industry around me was changing.

The biggest lesson of all?
Reinvention isn't something you do once. It's something you do over and over again.

Whether you're changing careers, becoming an empty nester, starting a business, or simply deciding to see yourself differently, every new chapter asks you to grow.

As I've aged, I've learned that chasing youth is no longer a battle I want to fight. At 80, you have to become more comfortable in your own skin and more confident in your decisions. Instead of worrying about aging, I try to remain more excited about the years I still have ahead of me.

"I don't want to spend my life trying to be eighteen again. I want to spend it being the very best eighty-year-old I can be."
Every decade has taught me something I couldn't have learned any other way, and I wouldn't trade that wisdom for anything.

One of the greatest gifts that comes with aging is clarity.
At some point, you realize time is your most valuable asset. You stop postponing the things that matter and you stop waiting for "someday." You become much more intentional about how you spend your days and who you spend them with.
We can't control how much time we have, but we can absolutely control what we do with it.

So make this chapter count!

Chase the dream. Take the trip. Start the business. Call the friend. Wear the outfit. Say the thing.
My goal now is to make every year richer than the one before it.
