In 1850, Andrew Tarbutton enslaved 25 people in Hancock County, Georgia. Today, a descendant’s railroad company is seeking eminent domain over land in Sparta, including property owned for over a century by Black families descended from the enslaved. Those families challenged the ruling granting that authority, and now the Georgia Court of Appeals will decide whether the project moves forward—or whether these families can hold on to the land their ancestors fought to own.
