Harvest doesn’t lie; you get back what you put in.

Haiti’s art goes back before Columbus. The Taino painted cave walls and marked their bodies with color — long before colonization touched this island. That root never died.
1944 — Le Centre d’Art opens in Port-au-Prince, founded by DeWitt Peters alongside prominent Haitian intellectuals and artists. Trained and self-taught artists in the same space for the first time. What came out of that room changed everything. Hector Hyppolite, Rigaud Benoît, Philomé Obin — their work reached global audiences and shaped generations of Black artists in America, including Lois Mailou Jones and Eldzier Cortor.
African roots. Indigenous spirit. European influence. All of it woven into one tradition. Schools of painting formed around entire cities and regions — Cap-Haïtien, Jacmel, Saint-Soleil. That’s how deep it ran.
2010 took a lot. The Centre d’Art. The Monnin Gallery. Irreplaceable murals inside the Holy Trinity Cathedral. Losses that still hurt.
But nobody stopped painting.
It moved. Into the diaspora. Into the streets. Into the people carrying it forward.

In 1804, Haiti became the first Black republic in the world.
The only nation in history born from a successful slave revolt. They defeated Napoleon’s army. They proved it was possible.
France’s response was to demand reparations — payment for the “loss” of their enslaved people. Haiti paid that debt for 122 years. The last payment was made in 1947.
The world responded to Haiti’s independence with embargoes, isolation, and a narrative designed to make sure no one followed their example.
51 years ago Haiti played in their only World Cup. Germany 1974.
This summer they’re back.
