Flashback to 2018 to one of my favorite photoshoots featuring that was shot by , and featured by Lee Carter in , who said of the collection: “The full scope of Katcher’s ethical commitment is rather head-spinning, just as it is to gape about his Williamsburg shop, with its complete future-is-now men’s range”. I was especially proud of this collection of outerwear made from , cotton, ready-to-wear made from , hand-cobbled footwear and sleek bags and accessories.

One of my favorite collections was Spring 2014. Like many of the collections, I used cutting-edge (at the time) materials like recycled Ultrasuede and traditionally sustainable materials like linen, organic cotton and buttons made from tagua nut shells. Like many collections I designed, we were never able to run more than a few of each item without commitments from retailers. I remember thinking about how proud I was of this collection and how surprising it was to be almost entirely ignored by the larger retail world despite putting together a Fashion Week presentation in Manhattan, participating in major trade-shows, events, showrooms and press. But I kept trying for 10 more years to have a breakthrough moment that could set Brave GentleMan suiting up for longer-term success.

As winds down, I’m thinking back to 2012 when I created these first Brave GentleMan suits from recycled polyester and organic cotton - the first vegan suits of their kind, I believe. I had never designed a suit before and I sought the expert guidance of and . At first they were made in Italy with great expense, difficulty and disruption to the factory’s production process, since I would not use any wool, silk, horn, horsehair or other standard faunal materials like buttons, interlinings, felts, and more.

One of my long term goals at Brave GentleMan was to iron out a supply chain for scalable, high-end, sustainable and vegan gender-neutral suits. There were fits and starts and so, so many heartbreaking “almosts”.

The truth is that I never was able to find the perfect material (from bamboo lyocell and recycled polyester to waste-diverted cotton and organic cotton twills and tweeds with and without a bit of stretch) and the promise of a major partnership was dashed in March of 2020 with Covid coming to knock us down.

At first, famed suiting factories in NYC scoffed at the idea of a vegan, circular and sustainable suit, some laughing me out the door — but there was always promise of emerging Next Gen materials and enthusiastic manufacturers and customers like you! To be honest, this is still a dream, but it’s delayed for now.

Dear Brave GentleMan supporters, customers, friends and family: It’s time to say goodbye.

After almost 15 years, Brave GentleMan will cease operations at the end of this month. I want to say an enormous, heartfelt thank you for keeping my vision, values and mission thriving far longer and reaching further than I ever could have imagined.

December 2024 will be the last opportunity to buy any Brave GentleMan items. It is my sincere hope that all remaining designs are kept alive in your closets and on your feet. While closing is a difficult decision, the impacts we achieved together over the last 15 years live on.

Brave GentleMan came into existence to make a point: that for design to be truly good, the beauty of an object must be matched by the beauty of how it was made. I was driven by the desire to transform fashion supply chains for animals, the environment and people. Over the years, Brave GentleMan set new standards, garnered attention from major press and celebrities, influenced legislation, led me to lecture and teach at top fashion schools, to write an award-winning book and help inspire a new generation of vegan fashion brands.

None of this would have been possible without you.
