Reflecting on the Women Dressing Women exhibit (until March 10) at the which is a celebration of the creativity, vision, and the indelible mark women leave on fashion, I couldn’t help but think of my own journey in fashion.
Having worked alongside countless inspiring women throughout my career – from Assistants to Presidents – I have to note that none held the title of “Creative Director” or CEO. It might just be semantics as every company is different and yet I am left wondering why wasn’t that my experience? And please know, I was equally inspired by the male leadership… it’s just that when representation is key to believing in what is possible, I’d like to see more women in those positions…which is why I loved this exhibit.
Seeing the diverse array of voices showcased is a testament to the ingenuity and artistry of female designers - from my favorites like Donna Karan and Madame Grès to discovering designers from the past and present. I’m highlighting my favorites. ;) So speaking of favorites - where were Stella, Victoria, Carolina, Clare, Donatella, Vera, Isabel Marant, Anna Sui, Tracy Reese, Mary-Kate, Mary Quant, to name a FEW? Their absence only underscores the need for greater recognition and representation of female talent in the highest echelons of the fashion industry.
Here’s to honoring the trailblazers and visionaries - past and present - and those who played a part in my journey, who continue to shape the narrative of fashion. May their legacies inspire a new generation of fearless creators and leaders.
