Salvage

Salvage Salvage is a clothing and home brand that upcycles and repurposes existing garments and fabric scrap Why does sustainability matter? What is Upcycling?

The fast pace of the fashion industry produces new trends that make our perfectly functional clothes feel old and undesirable. These pieces are usually made poorly and often fall apart, making it easier to just toss them and buy new. But this creates an enormous amount of waste, millions of tons of clothing piling up in landfills all around the world. The fashion industry is responsible for about

4% of the world’s greenhouse gas emissions, slowly contributing to global climate change. It may not be the leading cause of pollution in the world, but it is one that we can reduce! It’s time to do our part in saving the planet, any way we can! We are all guilty of buying mass produced merchandise and end up with it sitting in our closets or in the trash. Instead of throwing them away, decide to UPCYCLE them and turn your "fashion waste" into something special and meaningful. To keep your things from ending up as waste, even if you donate (see Donations tab), and to stop the vicious cycle of buying and throwing out clothes, updated with the latest trends and have a unique piece that no one else has. Upcycling instead of buying new not only reduces your personal waste, but it also puts less demand on mass production which means less waste from the big companies. up·cy·cle
/ˈəpˌsīkəl/
verb
gerund or present participle: upcycling
1. reuse (discarded objects or material) in such a way as to create a product of higher quality or value than the original. Upcycling is the process of transforming by-products, waste materials, useless, or unwanted products into new materials or products perceived to be of greater quality, such as artistic value or environmental value, prolonging the life of the original material. Why should you upcycle your clothes instead of buying new?

- extend the life of your clothes / maintain the memories and histories within your clothes
- personalize your clothes and make them special
- minimize your personal consumption
- make an environmental impact, help reduce landfill waste and the need for more mass production

Hi, I’m Britt Gates-Kayyem, founder and head designer of Salvage by Britt (Salvage Lifestyle LLC).
I grew up in Los Angeles, studied at the University of Pennsylvania, and earned my fashion design degree from Parsons in New York City. I started Salvage during COVID with the goal of giving old garments new life—proving that repurposed materials can still become modern, beautiful pieces. Recently, my work has focused on bridal, especially reworking mothers’ and grandmothers’ wedding dresses into something personal and timeless.
I’m so glad you’re here, and I’d love to meet you!

Haley’s Colorado wedding rehearsal look, reimagined from her mom’s wedding dress 🤍 Western-rooted, heirloom-held. We carefully took the original gown apart, preserving the lace and cutouts that carried the story, and gave them a new life for her own celebration. I also made two purses out of the leftover fabric!

A 1940s silk love story, reborn. 🤍✨
Erika walked into her Arizona wedding wearing her grandmother’s gown—reworked, restored, and revived for a new generation.
The same dress, the same legacy… just a brand-new chapter under the desert sun 🌵

Vintage silk, hand-beaded fringe, and decades of love stitched into every seam.
Seeing Erika wear her grandmother’s reworked 1940s gown on her wedding day—complete with the pearl + amazonite bolero—was a full-circle heirloom moment.
This is why I do what I do. 🤍🌵

Thank you, Erika, for trusting me with this very special project! It was so fun getting to know you and work on this project together 🤍

BEFORE
Erika trusted me with her grandmother’s 1940s silk gown and we gave it a revival fit for an Arizona sunset wedding—soft, rugged, sentimental, and a little wild. 🤍🌵
Sustainable love stories will always be my favorite.
