Words By Women Wednesdays is back!

Ellen Johnson Sirleaf was the 24th president of Liberia from 2006 to 2018 and the first elected female head of state in Africa.

Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, born in Monrovia, was educated in both Liberia and the United States, attending institutions such as Harvard University. She began her political career as Deputy Minister of Finance under President William Tolbert and later served as Minister of Finance until 1980. After a coup led by Samuel Doe, Sirleaf fled to the U.S., where she worked for Citibank and the Equator Bank before returning to Liberia to continue her career in politics. She was imprisoned for criticizing the military government but remained active in politics, finishing second in the 1997 presidential election. In 2011, Sirleaf was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for her efforts to involve women in the peace keeping process. In 2016, she made history again as the first woman elected Chair of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS)

Words by Women Wednesdays
Rosa Parks was an American activist in the civil rights movement best known for her pivotal role in the Montgomery bus boycott. Her activism and resolution resulted in significant changes including the November 1956 decision that bus segregation is unconstitutional under the Equal Protection Clause of the 14th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution. The United States Congress has honored her as "the first lady of civil rights" and "the mother of the freedom movement". After retirement, Parks wrote her autobiography and continued to insist that there was more work to be done in the struggle for justice. Parks received national recognition, including the NAACP's 1979 Spingarn Medal, the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the Congressional Gold Medal, and a posthumous statue in the United States Capitol's National Statuary Hall.
