Vampire moths are part of the genus Calyptra, which includes 17 different kinds of moth. Eight species have been reported to have bitten mammals, including humans, in the wild. Two, Calyptra fletcheri and Calyptra thalictri, have bitten humans in lab or semi-natural settings, like mesh cages and vials, in order to drink their blood. All of these types of moths, even the blood-drinkers, normally eat by piercing fruit and sucking out the juices. Evidently, these animals can also use their fangs to suck blood, but what's strange is since they can eat fruit... they don't have to drink blood... they do it because they want to.
..perhaps they've developed a taste for it.
