I was in upstate NY working in the campground store, a seasonal camper from Florida came in and told me a plane had hit the World Trade Center. At first I thought it was a freak accident. I think a lot of us did.
Not long after, he came back in.
“Another plane hit the other tower.”
I remember sitting there in shock and confusion. I closed the store and went to turn on the news. My great aunt was visiting, and we sat in front of the TV as we watched the first tower collapse. Time stood still that day.
The next day I remember seeing the image of the huge flag hanging over the Pentagon.
At the campground, we had a bunch of small American flags. I remember giving every one we had to anyone who wanted one.
Later that week, we held a candlelight vigil. I made pins with American flags for everyone.
It was about that time that the tattered flag was found at Ground Zero and was hung there.
In October, I put a flag decal on my car and drove back to Utah, where I would work for the winter. I had made that drive a few times prior, but this time leaving upstate New York felt strange. By then, it seemed like everyone had a flag displayed somewhere, at their home, business, on their car…I remember thinking it probably wouldn’t be like that once I left New York.
And then I drove across America and was proven wrong over and over again.
Flags everywhere.
A few months later, I volunteered at the 2002 Winter Olympics in Utah.
I remember watching the opening ceremony and seeing FDNY, NYPD and Port Authority Police along with athletes carry the tattered American flag found days after at Ground Zero which had flown proudly at the site. Wearing red, white and blue to pretty much every event, the incredible pride and sense of togetherness was such an amazing thing to witness, and a feeling I’ll probably never be able to duplicate again.

I’m baaaack!
WillisKa is returning to the Fall Edition Vintage Bazaar New England after a little time away!
I’ve been keeping things more local lately, but I couldn’t resist this one, it’s their 15th annual fall bazaar! Woo hoo!!

And boot shoppers…this is your warning.

Looking for a specific size or style of vintage boot? Comment or DM your size + what you’re hunting for and I’ll bring anything I have that fits the bill, because if I already own your dream boots, it seems rude not to introduce you.

This one has been a long time coming.
Full disclosure: this handbag was originally supposed to be an 18th birthday gift for my niece.
I missed that deadline, so I gave myself a three month extension and decided it would be her high school graduation gift instead.
And today, literally the day before she heads back to college for her sophomore year, I finally finished it.
So…right on schedule for Aunt Lauren.
When we were brainstorming about what kind of bag she would like me to design she randomly mentioned something about Guatemala. And I immediately had a lightbulb moment: I have fabric from Guatemala!
I had found the beautiful fabric at an estate sale years ago and had been saving it, waiting for the right project. The next time I saw her, I brought out all my pieces of Guatemalan fabric and let her pick her favorites. This is the one she chose.
And then the rest slowly came together.
The lining is made from denim I upcycled from preloved jeans. Inside, I added a custom pocket featuring her name in her own handwriting, laser engraved onto the leather. And the straps are repurposed belts I had collected over time…which, somehow, ended up matching almost perfectly.
There was a lot of cutting, stitching, taking apart, re-stitching, changing my mind about the lining, brainstorming, learning, asking for her input along the way, and more hours than I care to admit.
But that’s what I love about handmade things. Pieces collected at different times and from different places can eventually come together to make something completely personal and one of a kind.
This bag has a little bit of history in every part of it, and now it gets to start a new chapter with her.
I may have missed the original deadline by almost two years, but it was only one academic year by the extended deadline…some things just take a little longer than planned.
And honestly, I’m glad I took the time, because this wasn’t just a handbag I made.
It was something I made for her.
A little vintage. A little upcycled. A little international. A lot handmade. And a whole lot of love.
So proud of the woman she’s becoming, and so happy I finally got to put this in her hands today!

Another fabulous Second Sunday Market in the books!
Thank you Mariah, Noah and their team for another beautiful day!!
Thank you to everyone who stopped by the booth, tried things on, talked vintage, shared stories, shopped small, and supported handmade + made in USA goods. You’re the reason small businesses like mine keep showing up early with a tea in one hand and garment racks in the other.
But one of my favorite parts of the day had nothing to do with selling. I got to reconnect with a high school friend I hadn’t seen in 25 years and meet her beautiful family and then some longtime family friends stopped by, too. Those unexpected hellos and full-circle moments are pretty special!

I don’t make 47 of the same shirt.

I find preloved shirts I love (all made in USA, obvs), give them a new life with my own screen prints, and send them back into the world as one-of-a-kind pieces.

So yes, that little imperfection?

That’s part of the charm.

There are markets…and then there are communities.

A huge thank you to Maria, Noah and their team for everything that goes into making Second Sunday Market what it is. The live music, the amazing food, the welcoming atmosphere, awesome vendors, and all the behind-the-scenes work doesn’t happen by accident.

One of my favorite things about this market is the people. Vendors genuinely look out for one another, celebrate each other’s wins, lend a hand when it’s needed, and make sure everyone’s taken care of. That kind of community is rare, and I’m grateful to be part of it.

Yesterday was a perfect reminder of that. IYKYK.

…and apparently they’ll even sneak a bottle of water into your booth when you’re not paying attention.

And to everyone who came out to shop small yesterday, thank you. Every purchase, every conversation, and every bit of encouragement means the world to all of us.
