One of my favorite family travel hacks? Day-drop summer camps.

When weโ€™re visiting a city for a few days or a few weeks, I donโ€™t always want to entertain the kids 24/7โ€”and honestly, they donโ€™t always want to spend every minute with me either.

Day camps give kids a chance to make local friends, try new activities, and experience the destination in a way tourists rarely do. Meanwhile, parents get a few hours to work, explore, visit museums, go on a bike ride, or simply enjoy a coffee in peace.

The best part? Many camps allow single-day bookings, so thereโ€™s no need to commit to an entire week.

In this post, Iโ€™m sharing four camps weโ€™ve found in Edinburgh, Amsterdam, and Barcelona, but there are many more around the world.

๐Ÿ‘‡ COMMENT CAMP and Iโ€™ll DM you a link to sign up for my newsletter, where Iโ€™m building a growing list of European summer camps and activities for traveling families.

Have you ever sent your kids to a camp while traveling? Iโ€™d love to hear where!

This might be one of the coolest places Iโ€™ve ever biked. ๐Ÿšฒโœˆ๏ธ

Welcome to Tempelhof Field in Berlinโ€”a former airport turned public park where you can ride directly on the runways.

When the airport closed in 2008, residents voted to preserve the space rather than redevelop it. Today, itโ€™s more than 900 acres of car-free space for cyclists, runners, skaters, and anyone looking for a unique way to experience the city.

Thereโ€™s something surreal about biking where airplanes once took off and landed.

HUGE shoutout to for introducing us to this incredible place (and many more) and - who lent us bikes. You can rent cargobikes from them!

Bookmark and tell me, would you bike on a former airport runway? ๐Ÿ‘‡

Did you know this French city helped pioneer modern bike-sharing? ๐Ÿšฒ

In the 1970s, La Rochelle launched its famous free โ€œYellow Bikes,โ€ becoming one of the worldโ€™s first cities to offer a municipally supported bike-share program.

Just 3 hours from Paris by train, La Rochelle has spent decades investing in cycling and pedestrian-friendly streets. Today, the region boasts more than 280 miles (450 km) of cycling infrastructure and over 6,000 bike parking spaces, making biking a natural part of everyday life.

One of the coolest parts? You can ride all the way to รŽle de Rรฉ via a protected bike path across the bridge. Once there, youโ€™ll find an incredible cycling network, beautiful beaches, salt marshes, and charming villages that feel made for exploring by bike.

La Rochelle isnโ€™t just bike-friendlyโ€”itโ€™s a place where cycling is woven into daily life.

Have you ever biked here? If not, whatโ€™s your favorite cycling city? ๐Ÿšฒ๐Ÿ‘‡
