Historically, fashion from the African Diaspora has not been given the exposure that European designers have been awarded through various global fashion events and various fashion media and publications. Dating back to the 14th Century and the Renaissance, the beginning of artistic cultural flourish throughout Europe, the African Moors of southern Spain introduced Europeans to art, architecture, education, the use of fabric, and fashion. SAFWNY will provide people from across the Diaspora a platform to trademark their original designs and exquisite creativity in a way that other fashion events and showcases have not. Too often, Black designers have sought the opportunity to showcase their talents, only to be met with opposition and a lack of understanding of the African design aesthetic. Therefore, SAFWNY seeks to nurture young designers while giving seasoned designers a proper platform to showcase their line in a way that the fashion industry has never seen Black fashion.
