Burnt Sun

Burnt Sun Burnt Sun features tees with design inspired by Amharic and Tigrinya, two of the many beautiful languages of Ethiopia and Eritrea. www.burntsunapparel.com

Burnt Sun is a t-shirt and apparel line featuring designs inspired by the ancient written languages of Amharic and Tigrinya, which are spoken in the countries of Ethiopia and Eritrea. We find these “habesha” written languages in this region of East Africa to be artistic and beautiful in their own right. In 2014, we kicked off our first collection of shirts featuring the Amharic word for love: ፍቅር,

and the Tigrinya word for freedom ናጽነት

As two women from Eritrea and Ethiopia, we understand how important it is to give back, which is why 5 percent of our proceeds will go directly to organizations that are committed to advancing human rights and social justice issues. Organizations like The Committee To Protect Journalists and the African Women's Development Bank are great examples of orgs that advance our cause. This is an amazing story that touches on overcoming the odds. Although the focus of this story is not about Abezash Tamerat's rough childhood, it is the heart of the story. Reading this, we were moved just how far she's come after foster care and becoming estranged from her sister. Today, she uses her art to aid others. http://www.washingtonian.com/mom/features/abezash-tamerat-the-art-of-motherhood/

In the basement studio of her Riverdale home, artist and philanthropist Abezash Tamerat tacks swaths of canvas to the wall, then paints swirling, haunting figures that seem half sea creature, half human. She’s often joined by her energetic five-year-old...

It's no secret that Burnt Sun LOVES and celebrates the Amharic/Tigrinya alphabet. And so apparently does the artist behind the painting pictured above, which we have seen in many homes of friends as of late. We got very curious about its origins and discovered that it's one of the many works by the renowned artist Wosene Worke Kosrof. The US based artist is apparently the "first Ethiopian-born painter to transform Amharic script into contemporary abstract art." Now that's very cool! Long live the fiedel!
