A good mockup is easy to make. Getting it to actually look like that once it's manufactured, that's where most suppliers fall apart.
We see this a lot. A brand get's a beautiful digital design, approves it, get's excited, place the order... and what shows up is a slightly-off version of what they signed off on. Here's why that keeps happening:
1. Color doesn't translate. A mockup is built in RGB screen colors. Fabric is dyed and printed in CMYK. Without proper color calibration between the two, that vibrant blue on screen comes out muddy or shifted on the actual garment.
2. Pattern placement gets lost in construction. A design can look perfect flat on a mockup template, but once it's cut and sewn around seams, sleeves and curves, the artwork doesn't line up the way it did on screen, logos get cut off, patterns don't match at the seams.
3. Fabric behaves differently than the render. Software renders fabric as smooth and flat. Real fabric stretches, has texture, and reacts differently to print depending on the weave. What looked crisp in the mockup can look washed out or distorted on the actual material.
4. No sample stage before bulk production. A lot of manufacturers skip straight from approved mockup to full production run. Any issue in translation only gets caught after hundreds of pieces are already made.
5. Communication gaps between design and production teams. In a lot of factories, the people designing the mockup aren't the same people running production, and small details get lost somewhere in between.
This is exactly why we treat the mockup as a promise, not just a preview. What you approve is what we build toward sample first, adjustments made before bulk, same team overseeing design through to the final stitch.
This piece we finished for Puerto Rico Wrestling, is a good example, what you see is exactly what was approved from day one.
