French fashion house Louis Vuitton has recently opened their latest leather bag factory in the town of Alvarado, Texas, located around 65 km outside of Dallas.
The factory employs local residents, whose hourly wages start at $13 USD, to craft the luxury brand’s signature leather and canvas bags. This is a departure from Louis Vuitton’s tradition of employing artisans, known as “petites mains”, to exclusively handcraft their leather goods in France.
The opening of their Texas factory comes after the French house’s needs of increasing production in order to meet their high demand. In addition, Louis Vuitton’s opening of the American based manufacturing centre is also a strategic move that they hope will avoid any trade dispute between the US and Europe, after the Trump administration placed tariffs on selected European goods.
To strengthen their ties, LVMH CEO and chairman Bernard Arnault has also gone as far as inviting US President Donald Trump to the newly opened factory’s ribbon cutting ceremony. The gesture, however, has not been supported by Louis Vuitton’s womenswear creative director, Nicolas Ghesquière, with the Frenchman stating, “I am a fashion designer refusing this [political] association.”
