A photo from Allegra's first birthday back in Florida this November. I wanted to post it because, hello, our dresses, but was waiting to figure out the right thought to put alongside it.
The thing I keep coming back to–the thing I've thought about maybe almost every day throughout the first year of being a mother–is how we have the power to create the life we want to live. How our little family can decide what matters to us, what we want to pursue and explore, and the type of standards we want to hold. That mindset doesn't require having a child at all (it's obviously good to think about as an individual), but a new tiny little family unit just makes it so obvious.
No one said it as eloquently as my friend and former colleague in our conversation accompanying the essay she wrote for the first issue of the Leah'zine: "The more 'shoulds' you can get rid of and out of your mind, the better. You make your family what you want it to be and look like The most rewarding part of having kids is creating the life that we want."
We all spend so much time judging mothers and each other, forgetting that there are just different ways do most everything. Just because the thing/life/way someone wants is different doesn't mean it's wrong at all.
PS There are about 10 more copies of the Leahzine left. DM me if you want me to pop one out in the mail to you 💛
