We are wrapping up Older Americans Month, but the fight for our elders doesn't stop when May ends. For our final Freedom Friday of the month, we are pulling back the curtain on the final barrier to liberation: The Parole Interview.

Right now, thousands of elders across New York have completely transformed their lives. They are mentors, educators, and peacemakers inside. Yet, when they finally step in front of the Parole Board, they are rejected again and again, denied a second chance based entirely on the one thing they cannot change: their past.

True justice isn't a permanent cage. It's the belief that people can change.

As we close out this month, we aren't just celebrating the wisdom of our elders we are demanding their return. We stand with the in calling for a fair, fully staffed Parole Board and the passage of the Fair and Timely Parole Act.

Our elders have served their time. It's time to let them come home. ✊

This Memorial Day, we honor the sacrifice. But for Liberated People, honoring our veterans means looking at the whole truth. 🎖️🖤

Right now, there are over 180,000 veterans incarcerated in the United States. Many of them are Black and Brown elders who served their country, came home with invisible wounds—PTSD, traumatic brain injuries, and severe trauma—and were met with a cage instead of care.

They are the forgotten "Legacy Lifers." They survived combat, but they are currently dying of medical neglect and old age behind bars.

True patriotism isn't just a holiday parade; it’s a commitment to community wellness. If we can send our young people to war, we must have the courage to heal them when they return. Keeping traumatized, rehabilitated elder veterans in prison doesn't make us safer—it just dishonors their humanity.

Today, we stand with the to demand Parole Justice for our incarcerated veterans. Let's bring our heroes home to heal. ✊🕊️

For this week's Freedom Friday, we are taking you to the heart of Brooklyn. As we continue to celebrate Older Americans Month, we are honoring the Legacy Mentors, the elders who spent decades behind bars, only to return home and immediately invest their wisdom into the next generation.

When our long-term incarcerated elders return to neighborhoods like Bed-Stuy, Brownsville, and East New York, they don't just blend in. They step up. Working alongside community organizations, they act as violence interrupters, neighborhood anchors, and living ancestors for youth who need a guiding hand.

They prove that transformation is real, and that their freedom matters to our collective future.

Keeping our rehabilitated elders locked away doesn't protect our communities, it deprives them of the very leaders who know how to heal them from the inside out.

We stand with the to demand Elder Parole and Fair & Timely Parole. Let’s bring our mentors home.

Health is a Human Right;Even Behind Bars.
This Freedom Friday, we are looking at the 2026 theme for Older Americans Month: Champion Your Health. But for thousands of New Yorkers, "championing" your health is impossible when you are aging in a cage. Incarceration accelerates the aging process by 10 to 15 years. The stress, the lack of nutritious food, and the chronic medical neglect in state facilities turn "golden years" into a battle for survival.

Liberation isn't just a legal status; it’s a public health requirement.

The Facts:
📉 Recidivism for people over 65 is near zero (less than 1%), yet they are the most expensive to incarcerate.
💰 NY spends up to $240,000 per year to keep one elder in a cell, money that could be funding community health clinics and wellness centers.
🩺 73% of incarcerated elders suffer from chronic conditions like heart disease or diabetes, compared to 31% of the general population.

Keeping our grandfathers and grandmothers in prison doesn't make us safer,it just makes us sicker. We are standing with the to demand the passage of Elder Parole. Let’s invest in care, not cages

"A cell is not a sanctuary for our elders."

As we look towards Mother’s Day this weekend, we recognize a painful truth: thousands of New York grandmothers are spending their "golden years" behind bars.

For this Freedom Friday, we are centering the women of Bedford Hills. This prison is currently facing an unprecedented humanitarian crisis, with a tragic wave of deaths since the start of 2026.

This isn't just about safety; it's about dignity. Keeping aging mothers and grandmothers incarcerated does not make our communities safer. It only breaks families apart.

The Facts:
📉 Recidivism for incarcerated elders (people over 65) is less than 1%.
💰 Incarcerating one elder costs NY taxpayers $240K/year.

This Mother’s Day, we ask: Why are we prioritizing punishment over preservation?

We are standing with The Fortune Society and Campaign to demand Parole Justice. Let’s bring our grandmothers home. ✊

They Call it a ‘Housing Boom.’ We Call it a Generational Theft.
The headlines are full of record prices in Brooklyn, but they don’t tell you who is paying the price. While investors and cash-rich buyers are cashing in, real families in Crown Heights, Bed-Stuy, and East New York are being locked out of their own future.

This isn’t just a housing crisis—it's a generational theft. The new ‘rate lock-in’ is squeezing the supply of affordable homes, forcing families to sell to the highest cash bidder and stripping the opportunity for generational wealth from the very people who built these communities. 🏠💸

We need to start telling the real story of Brooklyn real estate. It’s not about supply and demand; it’s about displacement, exclusion, and the systematic erosion of community.

It’s time to stop treating homes like stocks and start protecting our neighborhoods. ✊🏾

"I was there. I know what they need." Freddie Nole
spent 49 years in the system. When he was finally liberated, he didn't just look for a fresh start—he created a lifeline for others.

His program, Meeting at the Door, is a masterclass in community care. Freddie meets newly released people at the prison gates with a suit, a hot meal, and a ride home. He’s the bridge between a cage and a community.

Today is May 1st—the start of Older Americans Month. At Liberated People, we believe liberation has no expiration date. Keeping elders behind bars doesn't make us safer; it just keeps families apart.

The Facts: 📉 People over 65 have the lowest recidivism rates (less than 1%).
💰 Incarcerating an elderly person costs NY taxpayers over $240K/year.

We’re standing with the Campaign to demand the passage of Elder Parole. Let’s invest in care, not cages.
