Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost has been elected as the 267th pope of the Roman Catholic Church, taking the name Pope Leo XIV. This historic event marks the first time an American has ascended to the papacy. The announcement was made on May 8, 2025, following the traditional white smoke signal from the Sistine Chapel and the proclamation of "Habemus Papam!"

Early Life and Education
Born on September 14, 1955, in Chicago, Illinois, Robert Prevost is of Italian, French, and Spanish descent. He pursued a Bachelor of Science in Mathematics at Villanova University, graduating in 1977. That same year, he entered the novitiate of the Order of Saint Augustine (OSA) and made his solemn vows in 1981. He earned a Master of Divinity from the Catholic Theological Union in Chicago and later obtained a licentiate and doctorate in canon law from the Pontifical University of St. Thomas Aquinas (Angelicum) in Rome.

Missionary Work and Leadership Roles
In 1985, Prevost began missionary work in Peru, serving in various capacities including community prior, director of formation, and professor of canon law. He became a naturalized Peruvian citizen during his tenure there. In 1999, he was elected provincial prior of the Augustinian Province in Chicago and, two years later, was elected prior general of the worldwide Augustinian order, a position he held until 2013.

In 2014, Pope Francis appointed him as the apostolic administrator of the Diocese of Chiclayo in Peru, and he was consecrated as bishop later that year. He served as bishop of Chiclayo from 2015 and was also appointed as apostolic administrator of the Diocese of Callao in 2020.

Vatican Service
Prevost's service in the Vatican began with his appointment as a member of the Congregation for the Clergy in 2019 and the Congregation for Bishops in 2020. In January 2023, Pope Francis appointed him as the prefect of the Dicastery for Bishops and president of the Pontifical Commission for Latin America. He was elevated to the rank of cardinal in September 2023.

Election as Pope Leo XIV
The conclave that elected Prevost began on May 7, 2025, with 133 cardinal electors participating. Prevost secured the required two-thirds majority in the fourth round of voting. His election was announced on May 8, 2025, and he chose the papal name Leo XIV, becoming the first pope to take this name since Pope Leo XIII, who served from 1878 to 1903.
