HOLIDAY STRESS BUSTERS:

Get enough sleep: Being well-rested can make a big impact on your ability to cope with stress. Be sure to make sleep a priority and remember that drinking alcohol excessively can compromise the quality of your rest.

Choose a physical activity you enjoy and do it!: Physical exercise for 20 minutes or longer keeps your body fit and more ready to respond to daily stress. It also provides a healthy distraction when you are feeling overwhelmed.

Reach out for support: Spending time with a friend or anyone else you trust can help you cope with anxiety and provide a rewarding break from competing stressors.

Be honest with people around you: Friends and family can help reduce your stress more efficiently if you help make them aware of it. Having direct and frank communication with people who care about you allows them to better understand what may be stress-triggering for you.

Anticipate: Crowded social situations can create tension. Becoming informed about an event ahead of time (how many people are attending, etc.) can reduce unpredictability and the stress it produces. Coming prepared with an “exit strategy”- a planned excuse to use if your anxiety becomes intolerable - can also ease the situation.

Think of alternatives to alcohol for stress reduction: Alcohol may provide a temporary escape from stress but there are other ways to cope that are healthier and more effective over the long term. Be in tune with yourself and experiment with other activities before reaching for a drink. Sometimes small things like spending time with a pet or a friend, working out, or just taking a nap can diminish your stress levels.
