New York Reflections 07: Fashion (!!!)

I had to end w/ fashion.

When I was younger, I used clothes to figure out who I might become. Now, I use them to celebrate who I am.

20 years later, I still get excited about getting dressed. I hope I always do.

Seven reflections. One week. Twenty years of becoming!!

Here’s to what comes next, xo 🎉✨ (shout out to JRAT for designing amazing dress/work of art that I will be wearing somewhere soon 🤩)

New York, somewhere along the way/beginning 💗

I’ve always loved getting dressed + I still have those shoes 😂

Clothes have helped me play, experiment, express myself + sometimes figure out who I was becoming.

20 years later, I still get excited about putting together a look! It’s actually gotten easier ✨

Tomorrow: one last New York reflection. 🎉

New York Reflections 06: Survival + Ambition

Survival has meant different things during different chapters of my New York life (luckily I’ve only been attacked once).

I’ve learned how to adapt, change course, make a living from my ideas + keep going when the plan stops working - ugh

But one thing hasn’t really changed: my ambition (thank GOD).

I still have dreams so big they scare me a little.

Maybe New York taught me how to survive. But ambition is what keeps me from settling for the hard type of survival.

Things New York taught me - ahhh ❤️

New York Reflections 05: Creativity

I didn’t move to New York to have a creative career. Somewhere along the way, I picked up a camera, started a blog, made a zine + kept going 💃🏾💃🏾💃🏾

That curiosity led to writing, teaching, books, making, art, design + sew much more.

20 years later, I realize creativity isn’t just something I do. It’s how I like to move through the world - what I wear, live, eat, breathe, etc .

Maybe that’s what NYC taught me: you don’t always have to know where something is leading.
Just keep following your curiosity…

Oh the things that this city taught me while dodging all the rats 🥹✨❤️

New York Reflections 04: Love + Loss

Twenty years is a long time to love people + this city .

There have been marriages, friendships, family, collaborators, unexpected connections and a lot of goodbyes 🥹

I care deeply about people. I think I always will. + I’m learning that loving someone + having them remain in your life aren’t always the same thing.

Maybe some of the most meaningful relationships aren’t meant to last forever.

Things New York taught me ❤️

New York Reflections 03 : Home + Space

In 20 years, I’ve lived in seven apartments, opened five stores (+ after recording this, remembered two studios and a gallery). 🤓😂

Apparently, I’ve spent a lot of my New York life finding spaces and making them my own.

I’ve learned that a space doesn’t have to belong to you forever for you to make a home there. Hang the art. Fill it with things you ❤️. Invite people in. Make something happen in it .

Maybe home isn’t always about permanence or ownership 🤷🏾‍♀️

Sometimes it’s simply about what you create while you’re there.

20 years in New York 🥹🎉🗽

Today officially marks 20 years since I arrived in New York City!

I’ve been thinking about the things this city has taught me the 1st two I’ll share are about people + reinvention.

Oh people there’s the ones who stay, the ones who don’t, and the ones who change us along the way.

And reinvention - the permission to become someone you couldn’t have imagined when you first arrived - like who knew…

Twenty years. So many people. So many versions of myself.

Things New York taught me.

More later ❤️
