It doesn’t come as a surprise that Chinese fast-fashion giant Shein is abusing its workers, but the details are still shockingly bad. A new investigation into the company revealed that workers make four cents per garment, are withheld their first month’s pay, and wash their hair during lunch breaks, among other alarming practices. UK broadcaster Channel 4 sent an undercover worker to film inside of two factories that supply clothes to the giant. In one factory, Channel 4 found that workers receive a base salary of 4,000 yuan per month — roughly $556 — to make 500 pieces of clothing per day. Workers in both factories were working up to 18-hour days and were given only one day off a month.
