A male gray whale once again washed ashore near Bay Center, Washington, on Thursday, May 14. This marks the 21st gray whale death reported along the Washington coast in 2026.

On the same day, another deceased male gray whale was reported near Moclips, Washington, bringing that total to 20 in Washington alone. According to the Cascadia Research Collective, the Moclips whale was severely decomposed.

The whale near Willapa Bay will be examined by the Cascadia Research Collective and the Confederated Tribes of the Chinook Indian Nation. Tribal representatives say parts of the whale will be used for educational purposes.

Back from my trip to Churchill Manitoba where I went to photograph the Beluga Whales that come into Hudson’s Bay at this time of year.
Day 1 turned out to be the best day for interactions & photo ops! The whales can be quite curious & playful - often swimming right up to our cameras & booping them with their snouts or trying to mouth them.

Back from my trip to Churchill Manitoba where I went to photograph the Beluga Whales that come into Hudson’s Bay at this time of year.
Day 1 turned out to be the best day for interactions & photo ops! The whales can be quite curious & playful - often swimming right up to our cameras & booping them with their snouts or trying to mouth them.
As you can see from the underwater images, the visibility in the bay is quite poor, so good images are only possible if/when the belugas come VERY close.

Eyeballed by an Orca!
A pod of Killer Whales investigate our small boat and team of three in Antarctica by spyhopping, a technique used to observe the view above the surface.
They were clearly assesing whether we were suitable prey or not as this is the exact same behaviour they use to spot seals on ice.
An incredible experience to be so close to these magnificent apex predators, a make eye contact!
