Byas & Leon

Byas & Leon The Byas & Leon Shoppe is a Brooklyn based boutique specializing in ethical and sustainable apparel.

In an interesting and rather poetic turn of events, 2020 actually makes 20 years of us (Harvey Leon and Rony Byas) being friends. From pedal bikes with reflectors in the spokes to street football games played until the sun went down - from adventures all over New York City to road tripping across the country and back, we've done it all as brothers. Byas & Leon was in many ways, somewhat of an oddb

all idea - considering that at the time (2012), one of us was still an Engineering student who dabbled in documentary filmmaking, while the other was a business student running his family mattress factory. We were of one mind however, through our mutual and growing interest in apparel production and more importantly, ethically doing so in Haiti - the seat of our shared cultural heritage. Seven years, and many spiritual milestones later, the physical Byas & Leon Shoppe was born, with the two of us succeeding in building far more than we'd dreamed of - a community :) A Black owned beacon for the ethical and sustainable future of fashion, a cultural hub of learning and love - not bad for two knuckleheads from Queens and Brooklyn right (laughs)?

Up first we’ll be graced by the presence of Mickheila Jasmin-Beamon: a Princeton educated attorney & equity consultant specializing in intimate partner violence and human trafficking. A mother, wife and fun fact; also a proud member of the Byas family, hahaha :)

See y’all soon, and come with something to write with okay? As always, space is very limited though. Link in bio to RSVP 🎟️

(( P.S: The first image is a representation of the one and only Jean-Jacques Dessalines—The man who brought the Haitian revolution to its zenith and declared Haiti to be a free, independent and BLACK Republic. The second is an image of Alexandre Pétion— a former officer under the great Toussaint L’Ouverture who continued Haiti’s development and would eventually play a major role in South American liberation…more on that later☺️ ))

So you know that we’re Haitian right? LOL

And prouddddd of it, the title (written in Haitian Kreyòl) means “HAITI WILL MANAGE IT”. It has long been our position that Haitian history is in fact, Black history, and that every member and ally of the Black diaspora should know this.

Well—we’re gonna connect those historical dots for you, and show you exactly why and how that overall sentiment isn’t just conjecture. Haiti wasn’t just important to Black American liberation—but to the liberation struggles across the Americas and Africa too.

We will get into it😌 An educational session followed by a very Haiti-centric/KONPA (the name of our music & dance) centric dance party DJ’d by the Byas & Leon Boyz themselves lmao🔥

This is happening at the Shoppe though so space is super limited! We’re keeping this one a little small but there’s still a few spots left! Big big last day of Black History Month at that, come learn a lil somethin and shake a lil somethin with us :)

See you 💪🏾🇭🇹

(( P.S: The first image is a representation of the entire island (what is now Haiti and The Dominican Republic) long before Europeans (specifically Christopher Columbus) made contact. The Island actually had several names at the time: Ayiti, Quisqueya and Bohio—the first two of which were eventually re-adopted to varying degrees by Haitians and Dominicans. The image shows the Taíno chieftains and their territories (cacique and caciquat, respectively). Honorable mention to Anacaona, not rendered here—wife of Caonabo and successor to her brother Bohechío—who became a legend in her own right.

The second image is a rendering of Toussaint L’Ouverture—the Haitian revolutionary and General who is widely considered one of the ‘fathers’ of Haiti. And for good reason. All of this and more on Saturday😉))
