Elan Cadiz graduated from City College of New York with a BA in Studio Art and a MFA Fine Art from SVA

Alexandre Kyungu Mwilambwe (born in 1992, Kinshasa D.R.Congo) lives and works in Kinshasa, Democratic Republic of Congo. He studied art at the Academy of Fine Arts in Kinshasa. Reposted from This week’s highlights Calabar Imports (), a retail store offering stylish, eclectic, and affordable items from Africa, Asia, and South America. Read more on them below!

“Calabar Imports is a family-owned business in Brooklyn and Harlem, run by Heloise Annette Oton and her daughter, Atim Annette Oton. In spring of 2004, Heloise and Atim embarked on a voyage to develop an innovative retail store in Calabar, Nigeria. This journey gave them the opportunity to build a collection of fashion accessories, cosmetics, home decor, and more. In the months that followed, as their collection began to grow, a spur-of-the-moment thought made them explore retailing these products in New York. They started as street vendors, participating in various street fairs across Brooklyn, Queens, Manhattan, the Bronx and Connecticut. The customer feedback and merchandise testing revealed that the idea was not only feasible but a hit to shoppers! In August 2004, they made it official by opening a permanent location on Washington Ave. Today, their flagship store is on Franklin Ave and they have two other locations—one in Bed Stuy and the other in Harlem (which has expanded to a gallery). One of their favorite Brooklyn memories is when they were at their Washington Ave location and would stay open until midnight during First Saturday’s for party-goers to visit and shop. Their continued goal is to keep listening to the community they serve so that they can evolve with the times and meet everyone's needs.”
