Good Morning Florida!
On this morning, June 16th back in 1955, Florida residents woke up to the sensational, shocking headline that Judge Cillingworth and his wife had gone missing, kicking off a years-long kidnapping and murder mystery. It wasn't until five years later that the truth came out. Floyd Holzapfel, a West Palm Beach garage attendant, confessed his role. He and a pool room operator named Bobby Lincoln murdered the couple in a plan masterminded by corrupt Municipal Judge Joseph A. Peel.
Peel had been taking payoffs and selling protection to local moonshiners and numbers runners. When police brought search warrants for his signature, Peel tipped off the suspects. Chillingworth discovered the corruption and vowed to have Peel disbarred. Peel served 21 years in federal prison before he was released on parole with terminal cancer. He died in Jacksonville nine days after his release.

On this day, June 15th back in 1822, Jacksonville was officially founded when a petition was sent to Secretary of State John Quincy Adams to establish it as a U.S. port of entry. Prior to being renamed after Andrew Jackson, the settlement on the St. Johns River was known as "Cowford". The name Cowford came from where cattle crossed the river.
