If you dream of one day having breakfast in West Helena, Arkansas, I've got the place for you. We were looking for breakfast and saw this cool old joint called Burger Shack. The other sign said, "Best Coke In Town." so we laughed about that for a while and went in for breakfast.

There was a nice older lady working the counter who took our order after scolded us for being northerners. It was good natured and we loved it. We noticed a sign that said, "44 ounce Milk Shakes." I can put a hurt on a milk shake, but 44 ounces? She said something about it being a southern thing and us northerners wouldn't understand.

We got a couple of egg and cheese sandwiches and some damn good coffee and headed down the road. If your dream comes true and you get to one day visit West Helena, Arkansas, please grab a bite to eat at Burger Shack and tell 'em a northerner told you to try the 44 ounce Milk Shake.

By the way, this is near where Levon Helm grew up and I'm gonna go out on a limb and say he probably spent some time at Burger shack.

Meet Helga Mullens, a Berlin, Germany native who has lived in Little Rock since 1965 when she married an Arkansas soldier who had been assigned to the Honor Color Guard on June 23, 1963 for President John Fitzgerald Kennedy during his Berlin visit. Helga has been writing to German Chancellor Angela Merkel for years. I recently met Helga during a visit to the Arkansas Governor’s Mansion where she purchased one of the Mansion’s official ornaments featuring the gates outside the home. Helga decided to send this particular ornament to the Chancellor as a reminder of former President and for Arkansas Governor Bill Clinton’s tenure as Governor and of the Chancellor’s friendship with the former Governor and President and in commutation of the end of her time as Chancellor. Upon Governor Asa Hutchinson hearing of Mrs. Mullens plans, he decided to add the historical connection of the occasion and enclose his own well wishes to the Merkel.

Helga Mullens is a fireball and a wealth of knowledge and history. Spending time with her was more than a treat. She is well-versed in the people and history of her adoptive state and an excellent ambassador as well. She is a self-described “cougar” being 82 and married to a 77-year-old happily for over 50 years. I am grateful for our encounter.

The most fascinating people are right here among us. Look up and listen. You’ll be happy you did.
