Traces of Texas reader Earl Tipton kindly sent in this photo, which belonged to his grandmother, Lottie Earl Austin. Lottie was born in Navarro County in 1913 and grew up moving between nearby boom towns. Her father operated the general store in three such towns, and she learned to drive his car when she was just eight years old. She claimed that she and her mother were the only “respectable ladies” around. The photo shows Tuckertown, Texas, which no longer exists. It was a farming community six miles southeast of Corsicana in the Powell oilfield in eastern Navarro County. Established in early July 1923, Tuckertown flourished briefly during the peak years of the oil boom. By the mid-1930s Tuckertown had two stores and a number of scattered houses; its estimated population in 1940 was twenty. After World War II most of the residents moved away, and by the mid-1960s Tuckertown was no longer shown on highway maps.

Thank you, Earl. I love this kind of stuff!
