Help us welcome these two handsome new boys to the cottage 🫶🏼
We’ve named them Fernando (the tricolor Crested) and Fabio (the Peruvian).
Unfortunately, this is a story we hear far too often: “My daughter absolutely loves them (and honestly, we can tell!), but she’s just so busy with school, clubs, and work to care for them anymore.”
While both boys are at healthy weights and appear well overall, the subtle signs of neglect speak volumes. Both had extremely overgrown nails and were severely impacted. Sadly, many pet stores fail to adequately educate adopters on all aspects of guinea pig care, and most research stops at diet and cage size.
For male guinea pigs, regular boar cleanings are essential — or at the very least, the area should be checked every time nails are trimmed. As boars age, they can lose the ability to fully clean themselves, making impaction more common. Left unaddressed, impactions can lead to pain, infections, and serious health complications.
These are gentle reminders that guinea pigs require ongoing, hands-on care, not just good food and a proper enclosure. We’re so glad Fernando and Fabio are now safe, comfortable, and getting the care they deserve 💚
