So you peed in a cup now what 👀? Here’s the tea ☕️!
1. In a hospital setting it’ll come down a “pneumatic tube system” (you can watch the last video in case you don’t know what that is ☺️)
2. A lab assistant will receive it and enter your information into a computer
3. The lab assistant will pour it off into a tube and drop it off to an MLS (Medical Laboratory Scientist)
4. MLS will visually inspect urine and decide to run it manually or on an analyzer (FYI we prefer the analyzer)
5. Analyzer runs urine (Chemistries and microscopy)
6. MLS will approve or reclassify (if they do not agree with what the analyzer reads).

What problem or gap were you trying to fill in the market? Let’s chat.

Fun fact: I was a lab assistant for five years before becoming a medical lab scientist (more on that another day). For as long as I’ve been in the lab, to date, there’s always been overtime. What does this mean? Well, the short answer is there’s a shortage. There’s not that many of us. And that needs to change.

The shortage of medical laboratory scientists is a growing concern that threatens the efficiency and quality of healthcare systems worldwide. As the demand for diagnostic testing rises due to aging populations, chronic diseases, and public health emergencies, the supply of qualified laboratory professionals has failed to keep pace.

Many current lab scientists are nearing retirement, while training programs struggle with limited enrollment and visibility, leaving fewer new graduates to replace the ones retiring. This workforce gap leads to longer test turnaround times, increased burnout among existing staff, and potential delays in diagnosis and treatment, ultimately impacting patient care and public health outcomes.

LabWho exists to fill that gap. To increase visibility, to make the public aware, to spark interest and desire to become part of those who healthcare simply can’t function without.
