In old Asia, “White Elephants” were considered sacred, and when recived as a gift, nothing was more revered. On the other hand, this was quite the burden for the recipient, as there were specific laws to abide by, and the Elephants proceed to be quite pricey to upkeep.

Ezra Cornell, an American philanthropist, adapted this phraseology to gifting at Christmas gatherings — no apparent value to the owner, but may have value to others, or the receivers.
