When I grew up, I lived near an Army base. The children from the base attended the same school that I did. These boys and girls were my friends and they represented every race. Throughout our childhood my friends and I enjoyed the wonder of being children. We learned together in school and played together at recess; oblivious to the cruelty within society. My parents never batted an eye to the dif
ferent color or ethnic background of the friends that I brought home. My mom would welcome us and happily make a snack. If my friends were lucky, we would arrive just in time for the homemade bread to come out of the oven. Many years later when I was a grown man, I began a new career in the city of Chicago. On this particular day I was at a company meeting. One of my associates, who was a gentleman of color, asked a question to our boss. Upon this comment, another associate replied with an ugly, racist comment about the man who had asked the question. I heard him clearly and I was shocked. Angrily, I sternly asked this associate to repeat his comment. At this point, he was quite aware that I was upset and he refused to repeat himself. I quickly realized that this was not the type of person that I wished to associate with; and I immediately distanced myself from him. Later, I was walking home and passed a nearby school. I marveled at the sight of such a diverse group of children. They were shrieking with joy; playing tag, kick ball, and running around. If these children did not bat an eye to the different color or ethnic background of their friends, then why should we? Like a rock falling from the Sears Tower, it hit me. I began to write a book, titled: Children Love To Color, Why Racism? I believe that its time we spread this good word of love and acceptance! Help me spread the word through t-shirts and other apparel. Help us end racial ignorance and insensitivity in society. Children Love To Color, Why Racism? Please help us to share this message with everyone that you possibly can.
