History of Gift Wrapping in the United States.
In 1917, brothers Joyce and Rollie Hall of Kansas City, Missouri ran out of tissue paper for the holidays and used "fancy French paper" meant for lining envelopes instead. The paper sold out, and the brothers began producing and selling their own decorative wrapping paper. They named their store Hallmark.
