✨It’s heartbreaking to watch longtime downtown businesses especially the ones that helped build the character and soul of our community struggle just to keep their doors open. These aren’t just storefronts. They are dreams, livelihoods, gathering places, and pieces of our city’s story.
Many small businesses are being squeezed from every angle right now: rising rent, higher supply costs, slower foot traffic, inflation, and changing shopping habits. Across many downtown districts, owners report that rent and operating costs are making it harder to survive, even for businesses with loyal customers and years of history.
What hurts the most is when businesses with longevity those who weathered recessions, pandemics, and years of sacrifice end up closing not because they failed, but because the numbers no longer make sense after rent increases. That’s not just a business closing; it’s a loss of local identity, relationships, and community pride.
Downtowns thrive when small independent businesses thrive. They bring charm, uniqueness, jobs, hospitality, and life that chains often can’t replicate. When they disappear, something irreplaceable goes with them.
Now more than ever, we need landlords, leaders, and communities to understand that sustainable rents and support for small business matter. If we want vibrant downtowns tomorrow, we have to protect the businesses that carried them yesterday.
Please support local when you can. A purchase, a share, a kind word, or simply showing up can mean more than people realize. 🤍
