Maybe you heard, maybe you didn’t; but Magic Bus (where Christopher McCandless/Alexander Supertramp passed away after over 100 days of living in and around it) has been removed from its location on the Stampede Trail by the Alaskan National Guard today.
This news really bums me out, as one of my few goals in life was to get to Alaska, walk the trail, and spend a few days out there.
Chris’s story has reached across the world and inspired so many people. Of course I never knew him personally, but I spent many nights reading and watching Into the Wild over and over again. His adventure of course was inspiring but I felt more of an understanding/connection with some of his own life experiences and ideas on how to interact with society.
Every death that resulted in the pursuit of reaching Magic Bus certainly is lousy, but it adds to the legend and goes to show how much Chris’s life and story has influenced so many different people- that they’d be willing to die for it. To spark something so rich and fiery inside an individual, that’s really something special.
Hopefully this bus remains intact and is placed somewhere in respect to the atmosphere of the feeling Supertramp stimulated.
