You know how I love restoring and altering cherished heirloom gowns so they can beloved by another generation! 💕

Before we did anything I asked the bride and her family some questions about what they wanted to do with the dress and how much of the original design she wanted to keep. They really wanted to keep the original essence of the dress and freshen it up a little to fit the bride and match her style.

This dress originally had long lace sleeves that were incredibly small and the bride and I decided to remove them before she put it on and we repurposed them into beautiful side gussets. The gussets expanded the side panels and allowed the back to close. The shoulder straps were also so small she couldn’t get her arms through them so lace from the sleeves was used to expand them. She also wanted the skirt hemmed to a fun t length and it turned out so cute!! The bodice also didn’t have much structure so some boning and cups were added as well. And of course her dress got a much needed cleaning to lift the yellowing from the fabric.

This dress cleaning 🫧 was so satisfying! Rainy day wedding in Seattle and a spilled drink cleaned up so nicely. Whatever your plans are for your dress post wedding, cleaning is always a good place to start. Even if you think your dress isn’t that dirty, you spent hours in it sweating and walking around outside, it definitely needs a clean up. Also your sweat damaged the fabric over time so those less visible stains are going to show up later on. If you haven’t gotten your dress cleaned it’s never too late! I still have room in my cleaning schedule this year, drop me an email and let’s get your cleaning appointment scheduled!

Neckline Redesign and a Princess Seam Adjustment (b**b lift 😉)

I love it when a bride walks in and tells me she has no b**bs. It’s all about the fit! A well fitted dress will make you look your best! The b**bs are there we just gotta make the dress work for your body.

Also reshaping her neckline was son fun and I love how it turned out on her! It really opened up that space and I’m glad she went for it! I’ll do a follow up post later to give y’all a peak behind the seams at how that all works. I used a special trick to make the new neckline hug flat agains her chest and it turned out perfect ✨ chefs kiss ✨

There’s a lot of possibilities when it comes to customizing your dress so never be afraid to ask if there’s something specific you’re envisioning!

Cleaning and Preservation 🫧

There’s a whole lot of stuff to do getting your dress read for your big day, but it’s just as important to think about what you’re going to do with your dress afterwards.

Wether you plan on donating, selling your dress, or storing it for future generations to appreciate, cleaning is a good place to start! Even if you’re not hanging onto your dress, most consignment and non profit shops will not accept a dirty dress and you will get more for it if it’s clean.

If you plan to keep it as a family heirloom, then cleaning it will help the fabric last and preservation keeps it safe for the long term!

All dresses are lovingly 💕 hand-washed by me using time tested, eco friendly cleaning solutions that remove the stains without damaging the delicate fabric. Most cleaning services put your dress through an industrial washing machine and machine dry it as well which is really rough on delicate fabrics. Your dress is washed by hand and drip dried only when you bring them to me. 🫧

This dress was clearly too small when she bought it. The bride she got it from was much shorter and the dress was too tight so it couldn’t fit down over her hips which is why it’s all bunched at the waist. I had to do some gusset magic to open up the bodice and the sides of the skirt as well. This dress had to be let out down almost the whole side seam. Once it was let out, and the dress settled down over her hips, it was still 4-6 inches too short, so I added some of the matching lace I sourced for this alteration to the front hem to bring that hem closer to the floor. The straps also had to be let out because they were pulling the bodice up too high. And of course, I finished it all off with a bustle. So a lot of work for sure but it turned out much better and the bride was thrilled!

This bride emailed me in a panic, her top priority was just getting the back to close on this dress she fell in love with. All of the seamstresses she talked to recommended added a corset back and she wasn’t happy with that solution. And she was right, adding a corset back was not the right solution. The problem here was that the dress was too small and adding material to the side seams is my go to solution for this problem every time. Adding a corset back doesn’t fix the actual issue and it just squashes you into a dress that’s still too small and leaves the rest of the bodice proportions looking odd. Any way, I opened the side seams down past the waistline and added matching material to close up the gap, which allowed the back to close. And that lace window back looks 🤩 perfect! If you had a closer back added she would have lost that gorgeous detail which is what she loved the most. And the lace I used to cover the gusset matches well enough that it looks like it belongs there.
