Thank you for loving her, petting her, holding her, taking pictures of her, cuddling on the couch with her, bringing your friends in to meet her and coming back again and again just to see her for the past 17 years.

Please know how grateful we are for all that you’ve done and we ask that you please do one last thing, selfishly and entirely for us - please share this post to protect our hearts. The pain of hearing “is your little dog here today” is too much. And we know this will happen, it’s bound to happen and we will be as strong as we can be in the moment. But anything you can do to protect us from experiencing this rapid fire over the next few days will mean more than you know.

Come in and give us a hug, share memories, tell us how much you loved her, cry with us, sit on the couch in memory of her favorite spot. We welcome your healing process and your love.

I want everyone to know that Ellie passed peacefully in her home. In our arms. Surrounded by loved ones.

I also need to be even more raw and honest for a moment here and talk about some experiences I had and a promise I’ll make because of them. I vow to never ever ever take it upon myself, unprompted and unfairly to tell anyone I’ve just met with an elderly dog how old my dog was when she passed away. It really hurts to be reminded of your loved one’s mortality from a stranger as your pet is approaching the end of their life. Unfortunately it was something that I experienced nearly every day out in public. Instead, when I meet someone with a senior and ask how old their baby is, I’ll smile and celebrate with them. I’ll tell them how special and wonderful it is. I’ll strive to be someone they had a sweet moment with that made their day a little better. I’ll lead with love.
