The shaka covers many scenarios—it’s a sign of respect, a greeting, a thank you, and if someone throws you one, it means - we’re good. At its roots, it represents acceptance—how someone’s loss became a symbol of connection in the surf community.

The story goes back to Hamana Kalili of Laie, a fisherman who lost his middle digits in a sugar mill accident in the early 1900s. His thumb-and-pinky wave became his trademark, spreading through the islands and evolving into the universal symbol of good vibes. In 2024, Hawai‘i made it official—the shaka is now the state’s hand sign, the first in the nation.

You’ll find shakas on most Distant Local maps…especially those of Hawai‘i.

Stoked to see that Lower Trestles was named the official surf spot for the 2028 Olympics. This is a great high performance wave and will provide the ultimate stage for the world’s best to get their shred on.

Trestles has been good to me personally over the years. Here is a classic pic of me ( ) and during a Bud Pro Tour event back in 91 I think talking about getting barreled at lowers. Ha ha. And get a haircut.

Avos…the life force behind chips and guac…and the fuel of many a feasts in the surf community. Those in the know…know that there are no chips like “Have A Chips” - but not many know that these chips are from Laguna Beach.

The Stand restaurant has been serving up Havas since 1975 - until they unfortunately had to close their doors a few years back. Generations of locals and tourists have grown up with this iconic institution and these soy flavored corn chips of the Gods…and while The Stand is no longer, the chips they served continue on - along with their mystery of origin and folklore of their Harikrishna roots.

Thanks to The Stand and - Dunn Family for setting the bar for chips and guac forever and for for capturing the childhood of Laguna Beach through your photographs…

Luke was recently inducted into the Australian Surfing Hall of Fame and has surfed on the world tour for over 20 years.
